One Grove was a challenge: The approach was steep with a limited view. The site then abruptly opened up to reveal a magnificent vista . . . but not much flat land. We maximized the use of the site by creating stepped terraces that envelope the residence and frame the spectacular views. While offering a sweeping panorama of the surrounding hills, they directly link all interior and exterior areas of the multi-story house. This design strategy maximized the site’s aesthetic potential, its useful indoor and outdoor space, and, as a direct consequence, its value. The dynamic thrust of the soaring inverted roof meets the landscape beneath a dominant overhang. The result is a sense of protected openness and freedom within expansive interior space surrounded by glass.
